Aiding Good Causes At School and Suburbs
We would like to take a breather this week from the weekly turmoil that entangles the Oak Lawn village board meetings. Instead, we would like to focus on some of the betters aspects that occur in that village and Bridgeview and Burbank.
On Sunday, the Oak Lawn Park District took part in its first walk to raise money in the fight against muscular dystrophy. The two-mile walk was held at the Wolfe Wildlife Refuge Center at 109th Street and Laramie Avenue.
It was nice to see so many people of different age groups engaged in a cause that has caused hardship for so many families. And in doing so, residents participated in a healthy walk through Wolfe Wildlife, a picturesque oasis.
They raised money to fight the disease and had a good time doing so. This has been a long and dreary winter. So, it was good to see so many residents get involved.
While strolling along Chicago’s lakefront is amazing, we agree that activities that are often held exclusively downtown are limiting. Some of these programs and benefits should also be held in Chicago neighborhoods and the adjacent suburbs. Not everyone can make it downtown for these events. Plus, sometimes it is a giant hassle to do so.
We also applaud the activities offered in Bridgeview, such as the annual “Under the Dome” car show held at the Bridgeview Sports Dome on Saturday. The indoor car show always draw large crowds as cars are judged for their appearance.
The Bridgeview Park District hosts a variety of activities for adults and youths. A yoga class is being offered for all levels at the Bridgeview Park District, 8100 S. Beloit Ave. The park district also offers some fun for kids, including a Cuisine Art Little Chefs Spring Delight class.
Burbank also offers a variety of activities, including activities for seniors at the Louis S. Viverito Senior Center, 7745 S. Leamington Ave. We often list the activities going on at the center in our Southwest Suburban Slate of Events column.
Soon, Memorial Day will be upon us and ceremonies will be held to remember the men and women who gave their lives for this country in the name of freedom. It also marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Most students have completed another year of studies and will enjoy the summer months.
We would also like to remind park districts, schools, community organizations and the suburban communities of Bridgeview, Burbank and Oak Lawn to send press releases to our office regarding upcoming events and achieving students and adults.
While controversy does gather headlines, the efforts and achievements of local youths and adults make interesting stories that have a place in community newspapers. Press releases may be sent by fax, (773) 476-7811, or by e-mail at vonpub@aol.com.
The news deadline is at noon Fridays with the exception of holidays. In the newspaper business, no news is not good news. We would like to hear from you. Readers who want to inform us of an upcoming event or photo request may fax, e-mail or call (773) 476-4800 and ask for the editorial department.
