Tim Unsworth, Former B. Rice Principal, Dies’
Richard “Tim” Unsworth, 78, who was the principal of Brother Rice High School in the late 1960s, died April 30.
Mr. Unsworth was a member of the Christian Brothers of Ireland when he was named principal of Rice in 1967.
He left the order to marry Jean Morman Unsworth, a former member of the Sisters of Mercy, in 1970.
Mr. Unsworth was a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and the author of six books, with his latest, Tim Unsworth: Articles from the National Catholic Reporter, going to the ACTA Publications printer on the day that he died.
Mr. Unsworth also was associated with three area colleges: De Paul, University of Chicago, and Northwestern.
His association with Northwestern was at its former dental school, which he attended from 1981 to 1987.
As an author and columnist for the National Catholic Reporter, Mr. Unsworth was a frequent television guest who talked about issues related to Catholics.
He got his start at the National Catholic Reporter soon after the appointment to Chicago of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin.
Among survivors of Mr. Unsworth, in addition to his wife, is his brother, Robert Unsworth, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, followed by a dinner, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25 at St. Clements Church, 642 W. Deming Place, in Chicago.
