May 7, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - Oak Lawn, Burbank, Bridgeview

Hi, Neighbors!

I hope that you are enjoying the May flowers, courtesy of all of those April showers.

This week, I have some very special greetings to send.  First of all, I would like to wish all mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, godmothers and honorary mothers a very happy Mother’s Day.  Motherhood is a noble vocation. Let’s all honor our moms and all mother-figures in our lives; not only on Mother’s Day, but every day.

I would like to send very special birthday greetings to Edward Toczylowski from Mike, Berny, Eleanor, Monica, Chris, Will and, of course, from me, too.

Mother’s Day is just a few days away, and if you’re looking for something to show Mom how special she is, the Burbank Park District can help. Children ages 3 to 12 may visit the Newcastle Park Recreation Center from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m  Friday, May 9, to make Mom a special gift. The fee is $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, and advanced registration is required.

Register at the Newcastle Park Recreation Center, 8050 S. Newcastle Ave., or call (708) 599-2070 for more information.

Congratulations to the newly installed officers of the Stickney Township Women’s Regular Democratic Organization. The 2008-09 officers are Maria Cesario, president; Debbie Deegan, first vice president; Sharon Foy, second vice president; Linda Hoffenkamp, treasurer; Marie Latus, recording secretary; Mary Kumar, corresponding secretary; and Cindy Thomas sergeant-at-arms. They were installed at a May 1 dinner at the New Martinique in Burbank.

St. Albert the Great Church, 5525 S. State Road, is looking for food vendors for their summer fest, which will be held Aug. 21-24. If you are interested or want more information, call Andi at (708) 423-0321.

Once again, St. Laurence High School will be hosting incoming freshman summer sports camps during June and July. Advanced registration is required for these popular events. If you are interested in attending one of their camps (basketball, wrestling, baseball, football and soccer), please call the athletic director at (708) 458-6900, ext. 256.

If you haven’t yet heard the Reavis High School Band and Choir perform, don’t miss your last chance of this school year. The band and choir will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12 in the auditorium at Reavis, 6034 W. 77th St. Refreshments will be served, and freewill donations will be accepted and appreciated. For more information, call Sandi McIntyre at (708) 424-6913.

Don’t miss the Starved Rock Land and Water Cruise, sponsored by the Burbank Park District,  on Wednesday, May 28. Enjoy a tour of the park on “Rocky the Trolley,” a wonderful lunch at the Starved Rock Lodge Dining Room, and a lovely cruise on the “Belle of the Rock” paddlewheel boat.

The one-day trip costs $55 per person, and includes round-trip motor coach transportation, departing from Newcastle Park, 8050 S. Newcastle  Ave., at 9 a.m. and returning at about 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (708) 599-2070, or register in person at the Newcastle Park Recreation Center.

That’s all for this week, folks! Please remember to keep me informed of your news and events.  I’m just a click away at burbanklife@donnalauritzen.com.

Until we meet again…
