The Spring Plant Sale sponsored by St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 9 in the church rectory garage, 6435 S. Kilbourn Ave. (north parking lot). The cost of plants is $l.75 each for fancy geraniums, and $1 each for begonias, impatiens, pansies and periwinkles.
Due to the popularity of this sale, pre-orders are suggested. Place your order ahead of time and have it ready for pick-up by calling Barbara at (773) 735-7222. I ordered last year and certainly have done so this year.
I spent a truly lovely evening May 3 in the Winter Garden at Harold Washington Library at the reception given by Mayor Daley in honor of Polish Constitution Day celebrating Chicago’s Polish-American Community. It was a beautiful setting for the Wawel Polish Song and Dance Group children performing “Stara Warszawa.” (“Old Warsaw”).
I had delightful dinner with Jolanta Harrison, president of the Emily Plater Polish School, Krzystof and Halina Wilk, Ed (Birdie) Ptaszek, Frieda Halowicki, Zbigniew Piwoni and Lucille and Donald Gutowski, who drove in from Schaumburg.
The Pre-Parade Brunch by the Chicago Society of the Polish National Alliance will take place before the parade on May 3, with entry at 9 a.m. and brunch at 10 a.m. Then on to the parade itself. Tickets are $20 per person, and reservations must be made by Tuesday, April 29. Please call (773) 489-1510 or (847) 635-0883.
President T. Ron Jasinski-Herbert will introduce the special guests from the Office of the President of Poland, which include Robert Draba, Assistant Director; Michael Kaminski, Secretary of State; Mariusz Handzlik, Director of Foreign Affairs; Consul General Zygmunt Matynia, Consul Pawel Pietrasienski, Adam Bielan, Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament; and the Most Rev. Thomas Paprocki, Auxiliary Archbishop of Chicago.
Event Chairman is Romuald (Ro) E. Matuszczak, and the Co-Chairmen are President T. Ron Jasinski-Herbert and Social Activities Director Mark Hrycko.
We learned last week that a 5.4 (Richter Scale) earthquake hit Chicago and the Midwest. I remember my son, George, while he was at St. Xavier University, telling me about the New Madeira Fault that goes through Illinois.
An earthquake has repercussions, happening about every 20 years. Now, I think he was a young prophet. We learn lots from our children.
Let’s remember that we Americans are involved in a war and losing many of our service men and women, and let us pray for their safe return... soon.
