It’s time to meet the new commander of the Chicago Police Department’s Chicago Lawn (8th) District.  “Meet and greet” Commander John Kupczyk on Tuesday, April 29. The community is invited to an open house and community evening at 6 p.m. at the 8th District station, 3420 W. 63rd St. Stop by to say “Hello” and “Welcome.”

Wrightwood Highlights

At 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, stop by the Community Room at the Wrightwood Ashburn Library, 8530 S. Kedzie Ave., for the Women of Wrightwood’s program, “Bridging the Generation Gap.” The afternoon’s guest speaker is Maze Jackson. Contact the library at (312) 747-2696 for more information.

St. Thomas More Church, 8130 S. California Ave., is sponsoring a “Pro-Life Bake Sale” this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. It will be held following the weekend Masses, except Sunday’s 7 p.m. Mass in Donlan Hall.

There are changes at CICS-Wrightwood. Best wishes to Eva Wilson, director, and Anthony Hightower, dean of students, as they leave the school’s community.  “Thank you” to both for their dedication and service to the school community.

Welcome to David Lewis, who succeeds Mrs. Wilson as interim director of the elementary school.

Congratulations to the following young men who attained “B” Honor Roll status at Brother Rice High School. The students are  Kirklinn Fowlkes, Martin Michaels and Quinn Michaels. Good job, guys!

Ashburn Highlights

St. Denis Women’s Guild sets up shop on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 following the weekend Masses. Look for the homemade goodies in the church’s vestibule, 8300 S. St. Louis Ave.

While we’re on St. Denis, hurry if you plan on joining them at the Monday, June 30 Chicago White Sox game (vs. the Cleveland Indians). Game time is 7:11 p.m. Tickets are going fast, so don’t delay.

The tickets are $20 and include transportation to the Cell. For more details on either the bake sale or the Sox outing, contact the rectory office at (773) 434-3313.

You are invited to attend the 3rd annual “Ashburn Community Teachers Appreciation Day” at the First Christian Church of Chicago, 3600 W. 79th St., on Sunday, April 27. A special church service starts at 10:30 a.m.

A reception follows honoring all teachers, and especially the teachers at the Ashburn community’s Dawes Elementary School, 3810 W. 81st Place, and Hampton Fine and Performing Arts School, 3434 W. 77th St. “Teacher of the Year” awards will be presented to one teacher from each of these schools. More accolades for Ashburn area students.  Congratulations to the following young women who achieved honor roll status at Queen of Peace High School. Making “A” Honors were Priscilla Candelas and Kathleen Frazzini. “B” Honors were achieved by Raven Proctor.
