Yoga is a group of ancient spiritual practices originating in India and can be a form of exercise. The exercises increase flexibility, tone muscles and act in a wholesome manner on various body parts. One of the benefits of yoga is that an uncanny sense of awareness is developed, thus enabling the person to take pre-emptive action on keeping away disease.
Yoga classes are being offered at Holy Cross Hospital, 2701 W. 68th St., on the seventh floor. Classes are $10 and are held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays or 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Loose fitting clothing and a yoga mat are required.
Beat 821 CAPS will meet at St. Bruno, 4839 S. Harding Ave., at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
On April 17 my friend Pat Charleston will be celebrating a birthday. I wish her a Happy Birthday. In the past I’ve written about Pat’s daughter, Kristen. She suffers from a mitochondrial disease, which is a disease of her DNA.
Every year in spring Pat holds the Kites for Kristen fund-raiser. All proceeds go to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation to be used for research to help find a cure for the disease.
This year Pat and her volunteers will be selling raffle chances at St. Bruno on April 12 and 13, St. Symphorosa on April 19 and 20, St. Joseph’s in Summit on April 10 and 11, St. Daniel’s on April 10 and 11, and St. Daniel’s once again on April 17 and 18. Please try your luck at the raffle.
Your donation will serve a good purpose. A set of my Bears tickets will also be offered in the large raffle.
On April 2, I signed, sealed and mailed my federal and state income tax. Please remember to do so by April 15, “Tax day.”
Income tax was not collected yearly until 1913, when the 16th Amendment was added to the constitution giving the United States legal authority to collect taxes on peoples’ income. The filing deadline in 1913 was March 1. It was changed to March 15 in 1918 and April 15 in 1955.
The price at the main gate of Great America is $54.99. If you are planning on going to Great America this year, you can enter for $26.50 if you go Saturday, May 3 and buy your tickets from the Animal Welfare League.
That is a savings of $28.49. And the best part is the shelter will receive $8 for every ticket sold. Please call (708) 636-8586, ext. 227, if you are interested.
