April 11, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - City

Now that your spring cleaning is all done (or almost done, right?), what to do with all those boxes and bags of old clothing and  general “stuff.” Circle your calendar for Bundle Sunday coming to St. Jane de Chantal Church, 5253 S. McVicker Ave., from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3 and from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Sunday May 4.

A trailer will be set up in the church parking lot to accept only clean, usable clothing. The event is sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and all clothing donations are tax-deductible.

On Sunday, April 13, parishioners and friends of St. Daniel the Prophet Church, 5330 S. Nashville Ave., will come together to help celebrate the Rev. John Cassidy’s 50th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. A Mass at 11:45 a.m. will be followed by a reception in Brennan Hall.

St. Dan’s also wishes to thank all the kind souls who helped with its recent Easter Egg Hunt despite the postponement due to snowy conditions.  The weather was much improved on Holy Saturday, so the children were not disappointed. A word of thanks to the Cub Scouts who helped prepare the Easter eggs filled with jelly beans, and to the Girl Scouts who did their best to hide the eggs.

Thanks also to members of the Knights of Columbus who donated cookies for the “after hunt treat time,” and kept a watchful eye on the cars that insisted on coming down Natoma Avenue despite the traffic of egg-seeking children.  The church is also grateful to Marianne Kaiser and her wonderful team of women who wrapped baskets and helped prepare the tags, and more.  Likewise, a hearty thanks to Kyle and Kathryn Cerven for all their help with transporting the snacks and prizes in their handy red wagon.

Friday, April 11 is the last day to hand in your St. Dan’s Garden Sale orders. Sponsored by the St. Dan’s Parents Club, this fund-raiser comes just in time for Mother’s Day and spring planting with a wide variety of hanging baskets, flats, patio planters and pots offered for sale.

All orders must be pre-paid and brought to the school office. Delivery of the plants will be Friday, May 2. For more information, contact Sharon at (773) 229-1857.

The 23rd Ward Senior Club invites everyone  to attend its meetings, which are held the third and fourth Monday of each month. Meetings take place at the Rhine Post VFW Hall, 5858 S. Archer Ave. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the meetings begin at 10 a.m.

Happy 28th Birthday to our “Earth Child,” April “Abba” Davis, who shares her special day with National Earth Day on April 22. Hugs and smooches from your family up north: Dad, Mom, Thom, Poppy and Mia. Enjoy your beer bread and brownies.

No school for kids on Friday, April 11 at Byrne Elementary School, 5329 S. Oak Park Ave., because of Teachers’ In-Service Day. Likewise, there will be no classes for public elementary schools on Report Card Pick Up Day on Thursday, April 17.

Those who placed orders for Byrne School’s Market Day may pick up their orders between 4 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22.
