April 9, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - Oak Lawn, Burbank, Bridgeview

Hi, Neighbors!

This week, I’ve noticed that nature certainly seems aware that it is springtime. The birds are chirping in the early morning, even though it’s still dark and cold, and the tips of the spring flowers are starting to swell into buds. Even the trees and bushes are looking a little green, and their buds are starting to grow. Now, if only the weather would catch up, it would be a great thing.

April 10 is National D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Day. Thanks to our Burbank police officers, who tirelessly work in our schools to teach our children how to resist drugs and violence.

Today, I have some belated birthday wishes to send. Happy 16th birthday to Zack Howard, who celebrated his birthday on  April 7, from Mom and Dad. Happy birthday to Chris Lauritzen (who happens to be my husband), who celebrated his birthday on April 8, from William and me.

If you didn’t have a chance to order Girl Scout cookies in January, you still have a chance to get some yummy treats.  Girls will be out and about on April 18, 19, and 20 during their “Feet on the Streets” campaign. They will be selling cookies door-to-door, and will also be at local businesses.

You will find troops at  Jewel on 87th and Ridgeland Avenue in Oak Lawn, and 79th and Cicero Avenue, Tony’s Foods and CVS Pharmacy at 87th and Harlem in Bridgeview and K-Mart on 79th and Harlem, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19.

Timothy Patula, a member of Boy Scout Troop 481 of St. Albert the Great Church, is working on his Eagle Scout project, a food drive to help the homeless and needy in our area.

Beginning Saturday, April 12, he will have drop boxes at Burbank City Hall, 6530 W. 79th St., and St. Albert the Great Church, 5555 State Road. Donations of nonperishable food are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the food drive, you may reach Timothy at (708) 422-5822.

The Burbank Fire Department is offering a free “Friends and Family” adult CPR class from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday,  April 19 at the Burbank Fire Department, 8455 S. Mayfield Ave. This class is open to all Burbank residents, and is limited to the first 25 participants. To register, call (708) 599-7766 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The Burbank Park District is offering an American Red Cross Babysitting Training course for children ages 11-15  from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at the Newcastle Park Recreation Center, 8050 S. Newcastle Ave. The cost is $15 per person, and is limited to 10 participants. For more information, call (708) 599-2070.

That’s all for this week, folks! Please remember to keep me informed of your news and events. I’m just a click away at burbanklife@donnalauritzen.com.

With a week’s notice or more, I can tell keep all of Burbank informed of what’s happening in our great town.

Until we meet again…
