April 4, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - City

I certainly hope that no one “April Fooled” you last Monday. I had some good ones for my family as I do every year and they can’t fool me because I am ready for them.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes are sent to a high school chum of mine, Maryann, and her husband, Frank Scalise, who celebrate on April 7.

Jot this down on your calendar: Chicago Police  Department Beats 813 and 833 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, in West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. So let’s get out and support them as well as know what’s happening in our neighborhood.

Last Friday, I was  invited to the Annual Board Installation and Award Luncheon of the West Lawn Chamber of Commerce (service to the community since 1972) at which time Dr. Loretta Visomirskis, dean of Richard J. Daley College, presided over the ceremony of swearing in the new board officers.

The new officers are Frank Lazarz, president, Prism Corporation; Maria Yanez, treasurer, Primerica; Forrest Harris, secretary, Mercy Medical Centers; Duane Watts, vice president for events, Daley College; Elizabeth Perez, vice president for fund-raising, Harris Bank; Maureen Raza, vice president for outreach; and Nadia Miranda, vice president for strategy, American Family Insurance.

There were many community service awards presented as well as interesting announcements. Two Chamber board members ended their terms after years of valued service, and they are Larry Gesiakowski of WGM Auto Restorations, and Lee Nendza of Andy”s Pro Shop who suceeded his wife, Debbie.

They were thanked for their many years of work and service.

And, speaking of high school, my alma mater formerly St. Casimir and currently Our Lady of Tepeyac, is planning its 13th annual scholarship benefit from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 18 in the Harold Washington Library “Winter Garden” at 400 S. State St.

The theme is “Creemos” or We Believe, in Spanish. The fund-raiser follows the 80th year of this excellent all -girl high school.  For more information,  contact Liz Lang at (773) 522-0023, ext. 205, or oltdevelopment@gmail.com.

To Dave Hajek, who continues his marvelous aquadynamics courses at Daley College, I tried to phone you several times to thank you for the article from the Redeye. I wanted you to know that I found out from Mr. Moskal of the Chicago Film Office that it was me who was quoted about being an “extra” and I was thrilled.

We send our Happy Birthday wishes to Mrs. Charlotte Alaksiewicz who turns 94, on April 3, and we join with her loving family in celebrating vicariously with them, and wish her “Sto lat.”

Other Happy Birthday wishes are sent to Elsie Novak celebrating on April 9; Alice Ralph celebrating on April 12; and Dawn DeRosa also celebrating on April 12.

Recently, I enjoyed seeing a lovely musical at Curie High School, titled “Into the Woods,” and I’ll tell you about it next time.

Now's a good time to kneel down and whisper a prayer for our guys and gals fighting overseas as well as a prayer for eternal rest to be granted to those 4,000-plus who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.  Amen.
