Hi, Neighbors!
I hope you had a wonderful Easter. It is now spring, and my seedlings know it. Over spring break, I planted a tray of seeds for my garden, and they’ve sprouted and are growing strong. It won’t be long, and the gardeners among us will be picking tomatoes and peppers.
March 27 is Kite Flying Day — time to dig out those kites the kids haven’t seen since last year, and give them a spin. Given the typical weather in March, it will probably be windy enough, and hopefully, the temperature will cooperate.
Boy Scout Troop 652 out of Oak Lawn Community Church, 9000 S. Ridgeland Ave., is having a “High Adventure Rummage Sale” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28 and 29. This event will be held indoors and outdoors, rain or shine. Proceeds will go to offset the cost of the troop’s camping trip in New Mexico planned for this summer.
The Burbank Fire Department is offering a free “Friends and Family” adult CPR class from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 19 at the Burbank Fire Department, 8455 S Mayfield Ave. This class is open to all Burbank residents, and is limited to the first 25 participants. To register, call (708) 599-7766 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Thanks to the Burbank Fire Department for offering this wonderful opportunity to the residents, and for all you do to keep our community safe.
Mayor Harry Klein has offered to forward cards and letters from Burbank residents to the officers who were wounded last month. Our officers are willing to put their own lives on the line every day to keep us safe. If you would like to express your gratitude, please send greetings to: Burbank Police Department, c/o Mayor Klein, 6530 W. 79th St., Burbank, IL 60459.
There are great things happening at St. Albert the Great School. Congratulations to eighth-graders John Nowobilski, Mark Murphy and Connor Hughes, who are recipients of the 2008 St. Rita Mustang Award, presented for outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular and community involvement.
The student council at St. Albert School started a reading blizzard in January, and the students have been reading up a storm. Each day every student spends 15 minutes reading a book, and for each book read, a snowflake was added to the wall to create a giant snowman.
The reading event became so popular, it was extended to February, and for each book read, a red heart was added to the wall. This month, they are adding shamrocks for each book read. Congratulations to all the students on a job well done.
St. Albert the Great School will host a new family open house and registration from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 7 and Wednesday, April 16. Registration is also being accepted daily from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for all grades — preschool through eighth. Call (708) 424-7757 for an appointment.
