March 21, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - City

The St. Turibius Mothers Club held their meeting March 11. It was nice to see all the teachers at the meeting, including Theresa Bonomo, who always provides me with the inside scoop of what is going on at the school.

The Girl Scouts provided the entertainment by singing several songs. A few of the Scouts are completing their community service badges. They provided some important phone numbers for the community, including the Senior Center (312-747-0440), which has a multiple list of services for seniors, including providing help in obtaining bus cards, license plate renewals, paying utility bills and hosting fun activities.

Information on the neighborhood cleanup may be obtained at (773) 581-8000 from the office of Ald. Frank Olivo (13th) at 6500 S. Pulaski Road. To report a pothole, dial 311, but first make sure you have the exact location of the pothole.

Thanks to Junior Troop 21360 for providing this information, and good luck on your community service.

St. Turibius Cub Scout Pack 3406 will be holding its annual pasta dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 29 in the lower church hall, 5646 S. Karlov Ave. The price is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and children older than age 5. Children under 5 will not be charged.

The seventh- and eighth-grade students of St. Turibius will be performing Living Stations of the Cross in the church at noon today, Good Friday. All are invited to attend.

Many of the eighth-grade students from St. Turibius have already received their acceptance letters to the fine high schools in the area.

An equinox in astronomy is the moment in time the center of the sun can be seen directly about the earth’s equator. The earth experienced its vernal equinox, or its first day of spring 2008, on March 20. Equinox is a Latin word meaning equal nights. The sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart on that day.

Unfortunately, even though it is spring we all know that we can still have cold and snowy days. But summer will soon be here.

Happy Easter to everyone. Do you still color  Easter eggs on Good Friday and have the basket blessed on Holy Saturday? This was a big tradition in our family for many years. On Saturday, we would load up the baskets with good smelling ham, Polish sausage, eggs and smoked butt, and get a front seat at the church.

The priest would come along and sprinkle all the people and baskets with holy water. Everyone was all dressed up in their Easter best. We would hurry home for Saturday lunch and sample some of that good food.

On Easter Sunday, we would have borsch, which my mother-in-law would make from the leftover Polish sausage water and stale bread. If you chopped up eggs, sausage and horseradish, that breakfast was enough to last till afternoon, and raise your cholesterol 200 points at least.

Hope you have good memories this Easter.
