The Boy and Girl Scouts of St. Turibius will be holding their annual pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday March 16. The cost is $6 per person for all you can eat. There will also be a bake sale.

The Boy and Girl Scouts will be collecting items needed for the Animal Welfare League of Chicago Ridge. Pet food, toys, blankets, towels and cat litter are needed.

If you bring an item for the animals you will receive one free dessert from the bake sale.  Please support the scouts and the pets of the Animal Welfare League.  The bake sale and breakfast will be held in the church basement, 5646 S. Karlov Ave.

The teachers of St. Turibius have been attending a workshop, The Six Traits of Writing. This will help the teachers bring the latest methods to the students for improving their writing skills. The sixth- through eigth-grade students did attend their field trip at Experiencia on 770 N. Halsted.

It turned out to be quite the learning experience. The students did run their own city, producing goods, getting paychecks and electing the mayor.   It was an exciting challenge for the students.

On Holy Thursday there will be a pilgrimage to seven churches starting from St. Richard.  The pilgrimage will leave at 6:30 p.m. and return to St. Richard about midnight. The cost is $6 and reservations need to be made by today, March 14. Contact the parish office at (773) 585-1221.

Calvary Lutheran Church, 6149 S. Kenneth  Ave., will be holding its Annual Spaghetti Dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 29. Advanced tickets will be sold after Sunday services but tickets will also be sold at the door.   The price is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 through 12. For more information, call (773) 735-6887.

I attended St. Daniel’s ladies night on Saturday March 2. The event was sold out. It was a good time with a buffet dinner, live music and many vendors. I bought myself a pin with two terriers, one black and the other silver. It will remind me of my terrier Buddy and my girlfriend’s silver dog Heidi.

Congratulations to my girlfriend Rosie, who won two raffles both consisting of gift certificates to a liquor store.

The American Diabetes Association will have its 20th annual American Diabetes Alert Day on March 25. A free seven-question test can be taken over the phone at (800) 342-2383 or online at diabetes.org/alert.  You will be asked about age, weight, family history and lifestyle.

If you score 10 points or higher you may be at risk for type 2 diabetes and will be encouraged to visit a doctor. Type 2 diabetes is adult onset diabetes and can be managed by engaging in exercise and proper diet. As a result of diabetes, I lost my mom and a lot of her sisters. That is why I try to watch my diet and exercise.

I give condolences to the family and friends of my neighbor Ann Steinbrenner, who recently passed away.
