March 12, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - Oak Lawn, Burbank, Bridgeview

Hi, Neighbors!

Did you know that March 12 is “Girl Scout Day?” Happy Spring to all of our Girl Scouts in Burbank.  March 17 is Campfire Girls Day, an organization that is near to my heart, because I was once a Campfire Girl. I don’t know if there are any troops in Burbank, but I would like to wish a happy spring to all Campfire Girls, young and old alike.

March 17 is also St. Patrick’s Day — a day when everyone is Irish!  Please remember to celebrate responsibly!

Although it still doesn’t feel like it, spring is coming. The birds have begun their annual fight to lay claim to the birdhouse in my front yard, and they are working diligently to prepare their nests. Even if the temperatures are in the ‘teens, when the birds are singing, can spring be far away?

There is much to do in our city, now that spring is around the corner.  Easter is just over a week away, and the Burbank Park District has planned some fun events. On March 15, take the kids to breakfast with the Easter Bunny, then let them run around the park, looking for Easter Eggs.  Breakfast is from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Stevenson Park Recreation Center, 85th Street and State Road.

The Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Newcastle Park Recreation Center, 8050 S Newcastle, Ave. at 10:15 a.m.for children 5 years and under, and at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 5 to 12.

On Wednesday, March 19, children ages 4 to 12 years will have a great time decorating Easter Eggs at Stevenson Park Recreation Center. The Easter Egg Hunt is free. The breakfast is $10 per child, and $5 per adult; and the Easter Egg decorating is $5 per person.

Moms and Dads, do you need a night out?  From 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 28, bring your children ages 3-10 years to Newcastle Park Recreation Center, 8050 S Newcastle, for pizza, snacks, movies and fun, while you enjoy an evening out.  The cost is $14 for one child, $10 for each additional child.  All children must be potty trained, and pre-registration is required.

For more information about these and other Burbank Park District events, call (708) 599-2070, or visit the Park District Office to register.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 8607 S. Narragansett Ave., is holding its annual Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 and 8 to 10 a.m. March 15. Stop by from noon Friday until closing on Saturday and fill a bag for only $2.  For more information,  contact Prudence Yontez at (708)599-4780.

The Burbank Titans Youth Football and Cheerleading Association is recruiting team members for their upcoming season.  The first early registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon March 15 at the Burbank Park District Building, 8050 S Newcastle. A $50 deposit per child is required at the time of registration. For more information, contact contact Mark Mellenthin (708) 430-0792.

That’s all for this week!  Have a wonderful week, and please remember to keep me informed of all of the upcoming events in Burbank.  E-mail me at  burbanklife@donnalauritzen.com.
