March 5, 2008   Southwest News-Herald - Oak Lawn, Burbank, Bridgeview

Hi, Neighbors!

Welcome to March.  I’m counting on that old adage about this month: “In like a lion, out like a lamb.”  Hopefully, we’ll soon start to see a break from the winter weather.  I’d like to start seeing some colorful spring flowers.

Don’t forget to move your clocks forward this weekend for daylight savings time. It will be a bit darker in the mornings when we wake up, but it will remain light later in the day.

WRHS, Reavis High School’s Internet radio station, is joining with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research. They are hosting a St. Baldrick’s Day at Reavis, 6034 W. 77th St., on Tuesday, March 18.

Among those who have volunteered to have their heads shaved for charity are state Sen. Louis Viverito (D-11th) and School District 220 Supt. Dr. James Steyskal. To make a donation to this cause, please visit www.stbaldricks.com. For more information, visit the radio station Web site at www.d220.org/wrhs.htm.

Residents may also call station manager Deanna Herman at (708) 599-7200, ext. 249.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 8607 S. Narragansett Ave., is holding its annual Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 13; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 14, and 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15 . Stop by Friday from noon until closing on Saturday, and fill a bag for only $2. For more information, contact Prudence Yontez at (708) 599-4780.

Burbank School District 111 held the 25th annual Spelling Bee finals on Feb. 12 at Liberty Junior High School.  Congratulations to champion David Styga of Liberty Junior High School for correctly spelling the winning word, “toboggan,” and therefore representing the district at the Suburban Cook County Finals on Feb. 26. Congratulations also to Alice Balandis of Burbank School, who is this year’s runner-up.

I would also like to acknowledge the winners and runners-up from all the schools in the district: from Burbank School, champion Alice Balandis and runner-up Jack Renfree; from Byrd School, champion Azmi Zomot and Daphne Domingo; from Kennedy School, champion Robert Navarro and runner-up Anna Dobrowolski; from Liberty Junior High, champion David Styga and runner-up Madeline Gilbert; from Maddock School, champion Paulina Gal and runner-up Stephanie Majewski; from McCord School, champion Clarissa Najera and runner-up Israel Lucero; and from Tobin School, champion Marcin Jachymiak and runner-up Nick Escobedo.

Burbank is very proud of all of these great spellers.

Although the weather is still cold, and there is still snow on the ground, it’s never too early to start thinking about summer. St. Albert the Great Church is already planning the Summerfest and Carnival. This year they will sell a MegaPass for $50, which includes unlimited rides for any age for all four days of the carnival, which is Aug. 21-24.

MegaPasses are available for purchase now at the Rectory, 5555 W. State Road. For more information, call (708) 423-0321 or (708) 424-7757.

That’s all for this week, folks! Please keep me informed of events in our community, as well as special events in your life, and I will do my best to keep the community informed. Keep my e-mail address handy:  burbanklife@donnalauritzen.com.
