Burke Wins Primary Race In 36th District

With more than 94 percent of votes cast in the race for the Democratic nominee for state representative of the 36th District, Kelly Burke managed to stay ahead of her main competitor, Michael Macellaio.

According to totals Wednesday morning, Burke came out with 5,128 votes cast and a 49.9 percent lead to Macellaio’s 41.77 percent and 4,337 votes.

Angela McMahon was at 3.86 percent with 401 votes cast in her favor, and Karen Sullivan Casey was at 4.47 percent with 464 votes.

The present state representative of the 36th District is Democrat James Brosnahan, who is retiring.

Republican candidate Richard Grabowski was unopposed in the GOP Primary.

As of Wednesday morning, 69 of 71 precincts were reported in the Democratic race.

Macellaio, a lobbyist, had the support of House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-22nd).

According to Burke, on Election Day, she was standing outside of the polls for 13 hours, passing out information and  talking with voters.

“I had four layers of clothing on,” said Burke, “but in the end, it was worth it.”

Several family members and supporters joined Burke at her Evergreen Park campaign office the night of the election.

When Burke walked through the door, the building erupted with cheers and applause.

With a long journey ahead of her, Burke said all she really wants to do now is take it easy.

“It’s been a long day, a long campaign,” she said. “And all I would like to do is sit on my couch and relax.”

Throughout her campaign, Burke made sure the people of the 36th District understood her plans and goals.

She mostly emphasized putting people back to work and attracting new businesses that will create jobs and careers.

Her other plans also include:

• Fighting for property tax relief and reinstatement of the 7 percent cap on property tax increases;

• Providing law enforcement professionals with the resources they need to keep communities safe;

• Reviving the state’s economy by establishing sound fiscal policies;

• Fighting for families by strengthening and promoting education;

• Reforming government and supporting strong ethics legislation;

• Pursuing tougher laws against those who prey on senior citizens;

• Seeking new solutions for those at greater risk of losing their homes to foreclosure;

• Identifying programs that help children find a path to college degrees; and

• Supporting the men and women serving the United States, especially those injured in battle, by creating programs that ease their return home.

“I plan to become a full-time legislator,” said Burke, who lives in Evergreen Park with her husband and three children.

The 36th District includes all of Evergreen Park and Hometown, much of Oak Lawn, Chicago Ridge and Hickory Hills, a portion of Palos Hills, and parts of Chicago’s 18th, 19th and 21st wards.
