Mark Veterans Day in Burbank

Army Creates ‘Covenant’ with City in Effort To Reach Out

Local dignitaries and members of the community will gather on Wednesday, Nov. 11 to pay their respects and give thanks to members of the armed forces, past and present.

The Annual Veterans Day ceremony will commence at 10:45 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on State Road and Melvina in Burbank.

Immediately following the ceremony, guests are invited to walk to Prairie Trails Library, 8449 S. Moody Ave., where refreshments and entertainment will be provided.

New to the event this year, community leaders will join members of the armed forces in signing The Army Community Covenant. This gesture represents the joint commitment to build a stronger community by recognizing soldiers and their families.

“The United States Army Community Covenant is an initiative the Secretary of the Army began to foster positive relationships between members of the community and the soldiers who are serving this great nation in the Armed Forces,” said Major Raina Coposky.

The initiative began in April of 2008 with 85 communities pledging to show their support by signing the covenant. Since then, its popularity has steadily increased.

“Throughout 2009, the process has continued as states, cities, and towns have taken that same pledge to support America’s service members and their families,” explained Coposky.

Several local dignitaries are scheduled to attend the event, including Burbank Mayor Harry Klein, who extends his invitation to anyone able to attend the ceremony.

“I hope that as many people in the community can attend and will attend, because it really shows our veterans our support,” said Klein.

State Sen. Louis Viverito (D-11th), who will be unable to attend, acknowledges the significance of this ceremony, and what it means to individuals serving in the armed forces and their families.

“A lot of men and women have sacrificed great amounts in going overseas to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said Viverito.

“We are grateful to those individuals and we are there to pay homage,” he continued.

In honor of those individuals who have given their lives for their country, a ceremonial moment of silence will be followed by TAPS.
