Oak Lawn 229 Budget Will Go To Furnace
Oak Lawn School District 229 Board members held their first committee of the whole meeting of July last week, with newly appointed superintendent Michael Riordan, who came on to replace Dr. James Briscoe.
Briscoe resigned his position to become superintendent of a school district in DeKalb.
The board said that they will be beginning the school year with nearly $21.6 million surplus in their account, much of which came from the passed referendum, as well as bonds.
Despite the fact that much of the amount will be contributed to the heating and cooling project, as well as general maintenance, Riordan told the board that they will be in excellent shape by the end of the school year, and that they can plan on still having nearly $9 million in reserves.
The board plans on discussing a tentative budget for the 2008-09 school year, which first must be published, be open for public comment and finally voted upon.
The board also discussed the student activity account, which holds funds collected by students from class trips, as well as various fund-raising events. These funds are not taxpayer associated.
This is the first year that the state of Illinois has asked to see information regarding the account, a practice that the state is now conducting with other school districts as well. The board currently has approximately $1 million in the account.
