A local student at St. Laurence High School, 5556 W. 77th St., Burbank, received honorable mention in the annual Chicago Metro History Fair contest.

Receiving the honor was junior Michael Wiencek, a resident of Archer Heights.

“These young men did a great job researching and putting together their material,” said John Kroc, an English instructor at St. Laurence who coordinated the entries along with history teacher Tom Rezek. “I am proud of them and I congratulate them.”

The eighth-grade science classes at St. Symphorosa Elementary School, 6125 S. Austin Ave., had a gourmet tasting of their subject matter.

Not only did they study and dissect a frog, but they tasted frog legs prepared by instructor Robert Culen. The students also tried snails, squid, octopus, eel, clams, mussels, oysters and fish head soup.

To the surprise of students and faculty, the food went over well. What surprised the students was that the fish head soup, a Chinese favorite, was a big hit.

The eighth-graders are also applied for certification with the National Wildlife Federation for the prairie garden. They are hoping to make it into a habitat for the local wildlife of this neighborhood.

To qualify for this certification, this prairie must provide the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover and places to raise young.

Local students participated in the state’s Operation Teen Safe Driving program Monday and Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Region1 schools that participated were Curie High School, Maria High School, De La Salle Institute and Dunbar Vocational Career Academy.

The safe-driving clinics are being held throughout the state, just days after officials announced data that teen traffic fatalities are down in Illinois in 2008. From Jan. 1 through May 1, 24 teens (ages 16 to 19) lost their lives on Illinois roadways. During that same time period last year, there were 67 deaths.

“We’ve made great progress to reduce the number of teenage lives lost on our roadways, and I think a lot of the credit goes to the teens themselves — for getting involved in Operation Teen Safe Driving,” said Gov. Blagojevich.
