School Events
Two students at Reavis High School, 6034 W. 77th St., Burbank, were named with the top young journalists in Illinois.
Juniors Mitch Armentrout and Miranda Culbreth, members of Reavis’ student newspaper, The Blueprint, were state medalists at the IHSA State Journalism Competition hosted by Eastern Illinois University on April 26.
Armentrout finished fourth in the state for his Editorial Writing. Culbreth placed fifth in the state for her Copy Editing.
The Reavis Blueprint was also represented by sophomore Jon Hewelt, who, along with Armentrout, was named an IHSA Sectional Champion Journalist the week prior to the state finals. The Reavis Blueprint staff is sponsored by teacher Karen Shaver.

The annual National Honor Society Induction and presentation of honor cords and certificates was recently held for students at St. Laurence High School, 5556 W. 77th St., Burbank.
Included in the program were the presentation of honor cords to seniors, the presentation of recognition certificates to juniors who already were members, and the presentation of certificates to juniors who already were members. The presentation of certificates to newly inducted sophomores and juniors also took place.
A candle-lighting ceremony also took place, and remarks were given by school president Tom Ondrla.
Among the Class of 2008 students who received their honor cords during the ceremony were Brian Brock, Thomas Cernauskas, Joseph Covey, Andrew Dauparas, Vincent Dore, Christopher Dronzek, Kevin Dybas, Paul Gal, Jordan Jaber, Joseph Jones, Joseph Kelly, David Kochanowicz, Eric Konieczka, Stephen Lesniewski, Michael Maielaro, John McGinty, Jeremy Mikula, William Miller, Luke Paterno and Ryan Rodriguez.
Also receiving the honor were Peter Ryszkiewicz, Eric Senase, James Sernek, Thomas Simek, Ammar Sunbill, Ryan Tabor, Christopher Tsouklas, Gianni Valsecchi, Francisco Velasquez, Anthony Walas and Michael Ward.
“Once again we experienced a very beautiful evening here at St. Laurence,” said Agnes Kasboske, who co-moderates the National Honor Society with Karen Mikan. “These young men represent the best that the school has to offer.”

Recreation and music camps will be offered for grade school students this summer at St. Rita High School, 7740 S. Western Ave., Chicago.
The band camp will be held for boys and girls in the fourth grade through incoming freshmen. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 7-11. The registration fee is $100.
Cindy Gradek, the St. Rita music director, will direct the camp.
A recreation camp will be held for youths entering the first grade through freshman year. Directing the camp will be St. Rita coach Jay Standring. The sessions will be held Monday through Friday.
Session I will be June 9-13, Session 2 will be June 16-20, and Session 3 will be June 23-27.

Several local students were inducted into the National Honor Society chapter April 18 in the school gymnasium at Mount Assisi Academy, 13860 Main St., Lemont.
The NHS program serves to recognize students who excel academically and have contributed to their school and local community by way of character, leadership, service and citizenship.
Local inductees were junior Sara Palomo, a resident of Burbank, and sophomore Abigail Durkin, Oak Lawn.
Senior Allison Sheedy, an Oak Lawn resident, is a current member of the NHS at Mount Assisi.
