A teacher from Reavis High School, 6034 W. 77th St., Burbank, will be among 30 high school instructors throughout the U.S. who will converge on Richmond, Va., in May for a three-day study of Chief Justice John Marshall and his impact on the American judicial system.

Scheduled to attend from Reavis is Katy Cunningham, who is a veteran Social Studies teacher who leads the school’s We The People Team and Community Service Program.

The annual seminar is sponsored by the John Marshall Foundation and the California-based Center for Civic Education, which selects teachers from a nationwide nominating process. It is funded by the Lipman Foundation.

The May 8-11 seminar will include a keynote address from Jean Edward Smith, author of John Marshall: Definer of a Nation. Smith is the John Marshall professor of Political Science at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va.

Participants also will tour the John Marshall House, an historic landmark in downtown Richmond, as well as other Marshall-related sites in the city, including his burial site at Shockoe Hill Cemetery.

Another highlight of the seminar will be a walking tour of downtown Richmond led by John Marshall re-enactor Mark Greenough. That tour ends with a question and answer session with the Chief Justice at the Virginia Supreme Court.

The final evening session will feature remarks by John Marshall foundation President James Morris III, and will be capped by entertainment from the Colonial Dance Club of Richmond, which will provide a program of Early American dancing.

The seminar is designed to educate high school teachers more deeply about the impact of the John Marshall Court on constitutional law.

Students at St. Laurence High School, 5556 W. 77th St., Burbank, recently made siege weapons in the Freshman World History classes.

The St. Laurence students were given the assignment of making a working model of a siege weapon used in the medieval era in Europe. The students learned how difficult it would have been to make such a weapon on the spot at a battlefield.

Each student wrote a paper describing how the weapons worked and how it was used in actual battle. Trebuchets, battering rams and siege towers were all on display in the classroom of teacher Brian Kovacs.
